SPEAKER

Michael Dell

Michael Dell is chairman and chief executive officer of Dell Technologies, an innovator and technology leader providing the essential infrastructure for organizations to build their digital future, transform IT and protect their most important information.

Michael’s story started in 1984 when the 19-year-old, working from his UT Austin dorm room, founded Dell Technologies with $1,000. Notably quoted as saying that “technology is about enabling human potential,” Michael’s vision of how technology should be designed, manufactured and sold forever changed the IT industry. In 1992, Michael became the youngest CEO ever to earn a ranking on the Fortune 500. Known and admired for his astute business vision and bold moves, Michael took Dell Technologies private in 2013, setting the stage to architect the largest technology deal in history with the combination of Dell, EMC and VMware in 2016 and the subsequent relisting of Dell Technologies on the public markets in 2018.

In 1998, Michael formed MSD Capital, now DFO Management, a private investment firm that exclusively manages the capital for the Dell family. And in 1999, he and his wife, Susan Dell, established the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation to accelerate opportunity for children growing up in urban poverty in the U.S., India and South Africa. In 2013, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation pledged $50 million over 10 years to the University of Texas at Austin through a naming gift, thus establishing Dell Medical School.

Michael is the author of two books, "Direct from Dell" and "Play Nice But Win."

STUDENT
SPEAKER

  Daniel R. Bamrick- Fernandez

Daniel R. Bamrick-Fernandez, elected by his peers to speak today, is graduating from The University of Texas at Austin with an M.D. from Dell Medical School and an MBA from McCombs School of Business. Danny earned his bachelor’s degree in history and Spanish from the University of Memphis and the University of Georgia and a master’s in biomedical sciences from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. In June, he will continue his medical training as a dermatology resident at the University of Illinois-Chicago.

Prior to medical school, Danny spent five years as an enlisted soldier in the U.S. Army’s 20th Special Forces Group, serving in Guatemala, Peru, Kuwait, Syria and Iraq. Since serving, he has continued to be involved in veterans affairs, alongside interests in anti-racist reforms, preservation of language diversity, support for people who migrate, and environmental stewardship. While at Dell Med, Danny co-led the Queer Medical Association, which supports efforts toward greater diversity and inclusivity in medicine.

Danny is proud to also have the support and encouragement of a big, loving family. He is here today thanks to their efforts and sacrifices. His great-grandparents migrated to this country from Italy and Ireland, as did his husband from Paraguay. His parents and grandparents built families through hard work in such careers as construction, military service, cosmetology, nursing and culinary arts. Their American dream had at its center a value on education, and they encouraged each generation to strive for opportunities beyond what they themselves held.
